The other word in the new “Eshbaal” inscription – suggested interpretations
The new “Ishba’al, son of Beda” inscription from our Khirbet Qeiyafa excavation is now reported on major news agencies and internet media. I cannot count the number of Facebook posts noting the find. Yet most news summaries do not mention the other word … Continue reading

Yossi Garfinkel has given an update on inscriptions recently discovered at Khirbet Qeiyafa (2012) and Tel Lachish (2014). The Qeiyafa inscription found in 2012 dates to the early 10th century BC in Iron IIa. An article on this has been written … Continue reading
Things learned from Yossi Garfinkel’s presentations in Tampa
We enjoyed a pleasant visit from Yossi Garfinkel Tuesday evening on the Florida College campus. He gave a lecture on Khirbet Qeiyafa to a full auditorium plus a summary of the first Tel Lachish season for a private dinner group. Here are … Continue reading

A Palace of David Discovered at Khirbet Qeiyafa?
The latest big archaeological news is the press announcement that a Palace of King David has been discovered in the Judean foothills at Khirbet Qeiyafa, a city dating to the time of his reign. Besides the palace, a large pillared … Continue reading
Information on the second Qeiyafa inscription coming later this year
A few people have inquired about the new Khirbet Qeiyafa inscription discovered in the 2012 season. I asked Yossi Garfinkel about it last week when I drove up to Chattanooga (from Tampa!) to catch his presentation at Southern Adventist University. He … Continue reading
Update on the Khirbet Qeiyafa Dig: One More Season with a Twist
A few months ago it appeared 2012 would be the last dig season at Khirbet Qeiyafa, one year earlier planned. That is no longer the case, and there is a twist. In the last days of the 2012 season, after … Continue reading
Archaeology is a Destructive Science
It is fascinating to uncover things that have not been seen or touched for thousands of years. Uncovered objects face hazards, though, especially when they lie on top of other things waiting to be discovered. Take, for example, the paved floor … Continue reading
That’s not a sling stone… THIS is a sling stone
Excavated a couple of days ago at Khirbet Qeiyafa… This is one of several sling stones excavated this year at Qeiyafa. Update: I should clarify that this was not David’s actual stone, nor was his stone likely to have been … Continue reading →
