The Harod Spring, or How Gideon Selected 300 Men for Special Ops

Gideon and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was north of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. (Judges 7:1, ESV)

There are few Bible stories more exciting than Gideon and his 300 men. Powerful Midianite raiders dominate Israel, but Gideon’s force of 32,000 men is intentionally reduced to a mere 300 who are chosen by the way they drink water from the Harod Spring. Gideon and his 300 men surprise the Midianites at night and win a tremendous victory.

The source of the Spring of Harod, at the foot of Mount Gilboa. You can read the full story of what occurred here in the first part of Judges 7.

Gideon’s unique selection method and the nighttime battle all occurred in the same area. This short video may illuminate this famous Bible event.
