The people of California recently voted Proposition 8 into the state’s constitution, overturning the state Supreme Court’s ruling that legalized same-sex marriage.
Reaction from the Left has been strong. Thousands of protesters have gathered against churches and Mormon temples known to oppose homosexual marriage. Liberal churches that support same-sex marriage are speaking against churches and Christians who stand by New Testament teachings. CNN has a full story here.
Key quote: “It’s very unfortunate and embarrassing that the (Christian religion) is in large part responsible for this act of bigotry.”
Note that an issue of biblical morality is being re-packaged as a civil rights issue. That’s the ticket to government intervention, even over the expressed will of the people.
New Testament teachings regarding marriage and the practice of homosexuality include:
From the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female. Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. Mark 10:6 – 8
God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature;and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. Romans 1:24 – 27
This is the will of God,your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor. 1 Thessalonians 4:3 – 4
Personal comment: If one wants to be a Christian, it should be a given thing to uphold the teachings of Christ. If one wants to re-define marriage, don’t pretend it is a ‘Christian’ value. Be honest and drop the name.
